UPM Biochemicals partners with Bilfinger for innovative biorefinery

UPM Biochemicals has selected Bilfinger as its maintenance partner for a new biorefinery in Leuna, Germany. This facility will produce biochemicals from sustainably sourced hardwood.

The agreement between UPM and Bilfinger spans six years and entails comprehensive maintenance services to enhance plant efficiency. The biorefinery represents a global first in hardwood-based biochemistry.

This facility is expected to produce approximately 220,000 tons of basic chemicals annually. The production will provide sustainable raw materials for various consumer applications.

The biorefinery, valued at €1.18 million, will utilize certified beech wood from sustainable forestry practices in Saxony-Anhalt and surrounding areas. The biomass source is traceable and adheres to FSC® or PEFC control standards.

Michael Duetsch, Vice President of UPM Biochemicals, highlighted the plant’s pioneering role in rethinking chemical production. He emphasized the importance of maintenance support to meet the plant’s unique operational demands.

Beech wood is recognized as a climate-resistant species, ensuring a sustainable raw material supply for future decades. The wood, typically sold as firewood or industrial wood, will be delivered through a regional logistics system.

The biorefinery will employ hydrolysis and other processes to convert biomass into products like bio-monoethylene glycol (BioMEG) for PET bottles, and bio-monopropylene glycol (BioMPG) for detergents.

Thomas Schulz, Bilfinger Group CEO, expressed enthusiasm about contributing to a circular economy through UPM’s biorefinery. He emphasized the company’s commitment to providing professional maintenance services for efficient operations.

Bilfinger’s service agreement will cover all aspects of maintenance, including plant, mechanical, and electrical components. The company has extensive experience, enhancing efficiency and sustainability for its clients.
