Blue Ocean Closures launches fiber-based screw opening for paperboard

Blue Ocean Closures has launched Paper-Plug, a fiber-based opening and dispensing concept that integrates a screw closure directly into carton and corrugated board structures.

The Swedish company, known for developing the world’s first commercial fiber screw caps, says Paper-Plug addresses a long-standing limitation of paper packaging: its lack of functional opening, dispensing and reclosure features.

“Paper packaging has historically been strong in surfaces and structure but limited in functionality wherever advanced opening, dispensing and reclosure features were needed,” said Staffan Andersson, CTO of Blue Ocean Closures. “We believe this opens a completely new design space where sustainability, convenience and economics increasingly reinforce each other.”

Unlike traditional approaches that rely on tear openings or separate plastic fitments, Paper-Plug integrates directly into board-based structures. It is produced using the company’s proprietary fiber forming technology, designed for low energy consumption at industrial speed.

The concept targets packaging formats that have traditionally depended on glass, metal or plastic. Target applications span dry and frozen foods, supplements, home care products, refill systems and e-commerce packaging.

“What excites us the most is not one packaging solution, but the many layers of innovation this concept enables,” said Carina Leandersson, Product Manager at Blue Ocean Closures. “We already see opportunities across several categories that have been difficult to solve with paper alone.”

Blue Ocean Closures is positioning Paper-Plug as an open innovation platform, available for both standardised solutions and proprietary collaborations with converters, brands and technology partners.

The company is backed by industry partners including ALPLA, Magnera, Nissha, Rottneros and Elopak.
