Guidance aims to enhance circularity in automotive packaging

The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) announced the release of a new guidance document called Automotive Packaging Materials Collection and Handling Practices.

This document was developed by SP’s Sustainable Packaging Work Group and provides voluntary, practical recommendations to improve recycling in the automotive supply chain. It builds on earlier SP resources and aims to promote packaging circularity within the automotive industry.

The guidance offers detailed material-specific handling suggestions, sorting strategies, space planning advice, signage tips, and implementation practices.

The primary goal is to help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers increase the recovery of recyclable packaging materials, reduce landfill waste, and minimize contamination in recycling streams.

Kellen Mahoney, SP’s Executive Director, stated, “This guidance reflects proven approaches to improve the quality and value of recovered materials.” He added that sharing these practices can help companies of all sizes adopt more sustainable packaging systems and improve overall waste management.

The document was created through collaboration among SP member companies, led by Gina McGee of RecycleMax. She explained, “Our aim was to develop a practical tool based on real-world operations and effective shop floor practices.”

McGee emphasized that industry collaboration can generate immediate benefits for recycling efforts and waste reduction.

Bridget Grewal, Packaging Director at Magna International and co-chair of SP’s Work Group, highlighted the importance of shared solutions.  She noted that increasing awareness of collection and handling practices can significantly reduce waste and improve the economics of recycling processes.
