Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners expands into UK with new biogas facility

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has announced its first UK biogas plant acquisition through its CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (CI ABF I). The company has made a final investment decision to purchase a combined pre-treatment and biogas facility from Danish renewable energy firm Ørsted.

The plant is located in Northwich and currently features a pre-treatment unit for municipal solid waste. It also includes a biogas plant that supplies electricity to the national grid. Subject to regulatory approvals, CIP plans to refurbish and upgrade the facility into a dedicated biogas plant. The project will include installing a new digester, biomethane upgrading units, and CO₂ capture technology.

The upgrades aim to produce biomethane and liquid biogenic CO₂, supporting renewable energy goals. Construction is expected to commence in 2026, with the upgraded plant operational by 2028. Once completed, the facility will process more than 170,000 tonnes of feedstock annually.

Andreas Brandt, Partner at CIP, said, “We are excited to enter the UK bioenergy market with this first acquisition. The Northwich plant strengthens our position in European biogas and marks a significant milestone for our fund and investors.”

He added, “The upgraded plant will contribute to local energy security and support growth and job creation in the community. We look forward to working closely with local authorities and residents to bring this project to life.”
