CARBIOS, a company specializing in biological solutions for plastic and textile lifecycles, announced that its enzymatic solution for PLA biodegradation, CARBIOS Active, has been included in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Inventory of Effective Food Contact Substances (FCS). This approval, assigned Food Contact Notification (FCN) 2325 and effective since February 29, 2024, paves the way for CARBIOS Active to be used in food-contact packaging materials sold in the United States.
CARBIOS Active integrates directly into plastic conversion processes, enabling the creation of a new generation of polylactic acid (PLA) that is 100% compostable at ambient temperatures. This biodegradation process leaves no toxic residues or microplastics behind. The PLA with CARBIOS Active is certified for both industrial and home composting, further validated by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), North America’s leading authority on compostable products.
This FDA approval and BPI certification signify a significant step towards reliable, fully biodegradable packaging solutions. “For CARBIOS, product safety is our top priority, and we consider the FDA’s FCN the gold standard,” stated Emmanuel Ladent, CEO of CARBIOS. “The US is a key market for our biodegradation solution, and we expect this FCN clearance to drive significant additional demand in North America in 2024. Well done to our biodegradation division teams for their tireless efforts.”
“CARBIOS is strategically forging commercial partnerships for its biodegradation solution with a specific focus on the US market,” added Stuart MacDonald, Senior Advisor for CARBIOS Biodegradation Division, North America. “Consumers’ growing preference for sustainable options, coupled with increasing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, are pushing brands and packaging industries to develop more sustainable products. CARBIOS Active addresses this need by enabling improved circularity.”
