Geno partners with Sojitz to accelerate commercialization of plant-based nylon-6

Genomatica (Geno), a leader in industrial biomanufacturing technology, announced a new partnership with Sojitz Corporation. The collaboration aims to accelerate the commercial production of plant-based nylon-6 using Geno’s proprietary technology. Sojitz made a strategic investment to speed up market entry and bring its business expertise to the project.

Nylon-6 is one of the most widely used materials worldwide. Traditionally derived from fossil fuels or recycled sources, it’s found in outdoor gear, apparel, military gear, and automotive parts. Geno’s technology enables production of nylon-6 entirely from renewable, traceable carbon sources. This innovation offers a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based nylon.

Mitsutoshi Takagi, General Manager at Sojitz, stated that challenging the status quo drives progress. He emphasized Sojitz’s commitment to promoting bio-based chemicals and accelerating the development of plant-based nylon-6.

Geno’s CEO, John Gugel, said the partnership aims to make cost-competitive, renewable nylon-6 an industrial reality. He highlighted that the material will serve as a drop-in replacement for conventional nylon-6, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Geno plans to establish a consortium with industry leaders to create a dedicated commercial plant for plant-based nylon-6. This partnership aligns with Sojitz’s “Sustainability Challenge,” which focuses on decarbonization and sustainable growth.

Geno’s collaborations extend further, including partnerships with Aquafil for renewable nylon-6, and with brands like lululemon, H&M, and Vaude. Geno also developed the GENO™ Bio-BDO process, now used at Iowa’s largest renewable BDO plant, replacing fossil-based chemicals with sustainable alternatives. Hyosung is building the world’s first fully integrated bio-based spandex manufacturing site, showcasing Geno’s broad impact on sustainable materials.
