Wan Hai Lines has announced the adoption of biofuel for its global fleet in a significant effort to enhance environmental sustainability. This initiative aligns with the emission reduction targets established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for 2030 and 2050, marking a notable step in the company’s commitment to lowering carbon emissions.
The WAN HAI 510, also referred to as “Tai Chun,” is the first vessel in the Wan Hai fleet to utilize biofuel. The container ship, which has a capacity of 4,333 TEU, currently operates on the CI6 route that connects the Far East and India. Recently, it completed a successful fuel replenishment in Singapore using B24 biofuel, supplied by KPI OceanConnect. This biofuel blend comprises Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester biodiesel (UCOME) and Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and is expected to decrease carbon emissions by 20% compared to standard VLSFO.
A spokesperson for Wan Hai Lines stated, “We recognize our responsibility to seek more environmentally friendly solutions. The adoption of biofuel is a crucial step in our journey towards carbon reduction and achieving our ESG energy-saving goals.”
The company’s shift toward biofuel reflects a broader commitment to sustainable development and proactive carbon emission reduction strategies. Wan Hai Lines plans to further enhance energy efficiency and explore additional low-carbon fuel options as part of its ongoing efforts to positively impact the environment for both current and future generations.
