Mondi, a leading global packaging and paper company, has introduced a new range of sustainable pre-made plastic bags, FlexiBag Reinforced. This innovative portfolio of mono-PE-based, recyclable packaging solutions offers improved mechanical properties, including enhanced puncture resistance, stiffness, and sealability.
The FlexiBag Reinforced range is designed to contribute to a circular economy by being recyclable where PE film collection facilities and recycling systems are in place. Mondi has developed these solutions in-house, leveraging its integrated value chain to tailor them to specific customer needs more cost-effectively.
The bags feature adjustable barrier protection, providing medium to high barriers against fat, oxygen, and moisture, making them suitable for the pet food industry. Mondi has also designed the bags to meet future regulatory requirements by allowing for a customizable percentage of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content to be added.
“Mondi recognizes the growing importance of PCR materials driven by future regulatory requirements,” said Dirk Gabriel, COO Consumer Flexibles at Mondi. “We are working closely with our partners along the value chain to understand each customer’s unique requirements and adapt our solutions accordingly. With FlexiBag Reinforced, we can offer a solution that approaches the material costs of conventional multi-material laminates for certain structures while providing recyclable packaging that gives our customers a competitive advantage.”
Mera, a German family-owned pet food producer, has successfully implemented FlexiBag Reinforced containing 35% PCR content for its 10kg packs of vegan dry dog food. The implementation process was smooth and efficient due to the bags’ compatibility with mera’s existing machinery.
“Mera is committed to sustainability and animal welfare,” said Enes Tajic, Purchasing Manager at mera. “Working with our long-term partner Mondi has enabled us to pack our dog food products in a way that supports harmony between our furry friends and the environment.”
