Modern Synthesis lands $5.5 M for biomaterials development

Modern Synthesis, a London-based startup focused on biomaterials for fashion, has raised $5.5 million in a funding round led by Extantia Capital.

The Seed 2 round includes support from Artesian and Collaborative Fund. The funds will allow the company to enhance production at its pilot facility and accommodate brands on its waitlist.

Modern Synthesis is collaborating with Danish fashion brand GANNI to launch the Bou Bag, which features its biomaterials. The startup was founded by former Adidas designer Jen Keane and synthetic biologist Dr. Ben Reeve.

The company utilizes nanocellulose made from sugar-eating bacteria and combines it with natural textiles like hemp and linen. This process creates various biomaterials, including leather-like textiles and transparent films.

Keane describes their process as similar to reinforcing concrete with rebar, creating materials free from petrochemicals and plastics. According to Extantia Capital partner Yair Reem, the materials rival traditional leather in appearance and feel.

Keane and Reeve have refined their production into three distinct steps. First, they grow nanocellulose in fermentation vessels. Next, they enhance its nanostructures for improved pliability and strength. Finally, they combine the nanocellulose with textiles.

Keane stated that while anyone can grow nanocellulose, their expertise and patents lie in transforming it into high-value, low-impact materials. The company can tailor materials from drapable textiles to robust, leather-like fabrics.

Regarding scalability, Keane mentioned that pilot equipment has been installed, and initial production panels were completed recently. They have also begun external technical trials with manufacturing partners.
