Materiom has announced the launch of Materiom AI, a generative AI chatbot designed to assist users with the discovery of biopolymers, ingredients, and additives. This innovative tool aims to accelerate biobased material development. Materiom AI is powered by Google’s Gemini and is currently available in beta on the Materiom Commons platform.
“We are thrilled to introduce this AI-powered tool to enhance biobased materials research and development,” said Jan Botha, Chief Technology Officer at Materiom. The chatbot focuses on expediting the initial phase of innovative biobased material creation known as “materials discovery.”
Materiom AI provides users with information on various topics, including natural polymers, additives, sourcing methods, and biomass feedstocks. It also identifies ingredients that work well together and outlines potential performance gains from different combinations.
Liz Corbin, Co-CEO of Materiom, emphasized the challenges faced by materials researchers. “Finding the right ingredients can be a long and complex process,” she noted. “Materiom AI aims to reduce this friction by delivering quick and accurate insights as part of the Commons experience.”
The chatbot is accessible through the Materiom Commons, an open-access database and community platform for biobased materials innovation. Users can explore a comprehensive database of renewable alternatives to plastics. They can also profile materials they’ve created and find potential collaborators among over 18,000 global users.
Materiom AI can answer various questions, such as sourcing biobased ingredients from waste streams or enhancing chitin’s properties. Depending on the query, the chatbot retrieves relevant scientific literature and extracts useful insights for users.
“In addition to directional guidance, it serves as a portal to 30 million open-access scientific documents,” Botha added. By integrating AI-powered assistance into the Commons, Materiom continues to support the advancement of sustainable materials innovation.
