The Biotech Open Platform, a new industrial and technological platform, has been established to accelerate the development of advanced fermentation processes, particularly precision fermentation. The platform, located in Clermont-Ferrand, has received an investment of over 16 million euros in its first phase.
The Biotech Open Platform is a collaborative effort between industry leaders Danone and Michelin, start-up DMC Biotechnologies, and Crédit Agricole Centre France. The platform is also supported by several public and private institutions, including the University of Clermont Auvergne, Greentech, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Region, and Clermont Auvergne Métropole.
The platform aims to provide a scalable solution for the production of bio-based materials and ingredients using precision fermentation technology. This technology uses microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, or fungi to produce proteins, enzymes, and other molecules used in industry.
The Biotech Open Platform plans to install an initial demo-scale production line by 2025, with additional equipment to be installed in subsequent years. This will enable the platform to meet the scale-up needs of its founders and eventually open up to other companies in the industrial biomanufacturing sector.
The platform’s development is expected to contribute to the growth of the bio-based sector in the region and provide opportunities for start-ups in the Innovation Village located within the Parc Cataroux.
Florent Menegaux, President of the Michelin group expressed her excitement by saying “The Michelin group is pleased to announce the creation, with its partners, of the Biotech Open Platform – a unique tool that will enhance the development of bio-sourced materials, a key challenge for the industry of tomorrow.”
