Danish biotech secures €3.34 M for mycelium-based binder

Danish biotechnology company Visibuilt has raised EUR 3.34 million in seed funding. The round was co-led by EIFO and Unconventional Ventures, with participation from Proptechfonden and returning investor EMDFonden.

Visibuilt develops bio-based alternatives to carbon-intensive construction binders. Its core technology, visiBINDER, is a mycelium-based binder designed for paving and infrastructure applications.

The funding will support the company’s move from laboratory-scale pilots to market validation. Visibuilt plans larger-scale production tests with industry partners in the coming stage.

Line Kloster Pedersen, CEO and founder of Visibuilt, said the round marks an important milestone. She said it will help mature the company’s technical platform and move closer to market.

Sara Sande, managing director and partner at EIFO, said concrete and asphalt production are among the largest global sources of carbon emissions. She said addressing that requires new solutions in heavy industry.

Thea Messel, general partner at Unconventional Ventures, said Visibuilt’s impact case and commercial case are closely aligned. She noted that each tonne of visiBINDER used in paving displaces a tonne of fossil binder while generating royalty revenue. Messel also pointed to Visibuilt’s early industrial relationships with Denmark’s leading concrete paver manufacturer and Copenhagen Municipality, calling it a strong execution signal for a hard-tech founder at this stage.

Construction and infrastructure rely heavily on binders like bitumen and cement, both linked to significant emissions. Visibuilt’s binder is produced from mycelium, the root structure of fungi. It is designed to be less energy intensive while meeting durability requirements for outdoor use.

The new funding will support expanded testing, a production setup for larger trials, and growth of the company’s technical and commercial team.
