CovationBio launches first U.S.-made Sorona stretch bio-based fiber

Covation Biomaterials, known as CovationBio, has introduced Sorona elasterell-p fiber. Made with partially bio-based Sorona polymer, it is the company’s first U.S.-produced bicomponent stretch fiber.

The fiber is now commercially available through regional distribution partner Mercados Internacionales, across the United States and Latin America. Local stock and regional customer service are meant to meet growing demand.

Sorona elasterell-p fiber delivers stretch and shape retention without elastane. That allows garments to keep their fit and recover their shape through repeated wear and washing. The fiber is designed for activewear and workwear, applications that depend on responsive, durable stretch. Its bio-based foundation gives apparel brands a lower environmental footprint alongside strong performance.

Steven Ackerman, CEO of CovationBio, called it the company’s first branded fiber. He said Sorona has long served as an ingredient in textile solutions used by major apparel brands worldwide. With the new fiber, he said, the company is pairing its performance and sustainability reputation with a stretch solution built for what brands need next.

Mercados Internacionales serves as the regional sales and market development partner for Sorona in Latin America. Local inventory is now available for activewear, athleisure, workwear, uniforms, and other fabrics requiring durable stretch and recovery.

Since its debut, Sorona polymer has become a widely recognized ingredient in apparel and home goods. It is a 37 percent bio-based polymer known for softness, stretch recovery, breathability, and wrinkle resistance. The polymer blends with natural and cellulosic fibers such as wool, cotton, and linen.

CovationBio, founded in 2022 in Newark, Delaware, has built its business on Sorona polymer since its commercialization 25 years ago. The company also plans to commercialize a new biomaterial, Xatryx bioPTMEG, in 2026.
