Charm Industrial pioneers carbon removal by converting agricultural and forestry residues into bio-oil and biochar. Bio-oil is injected underground for long-term sequestration, lasting thousands of years. Biochar is added to soil to improve fertility and water retention.
Decaying biomass releases about 3.5 billion tons of CO₂ annually, roughly 7% of global emissions. Charm transforms this residue into durable carbon forms.
The company is also redefining how carbon removal is measured and verified. It uses data capture and emissions tracking to ensure accuracy. Charm leverages Manufacturo, a manufacturing management platform, to handle complex operations and real-time data needs.
Challenges include hybrid manufacturing modes, safety protocols, biomass variability, and multi-site coordination. Before Manufacturo, data was recorded manually on paper forms and spreadsheets, increasing errors and labor costs.
Jackson Lisec, Lead Manufacturing Engineer, said Manufacturo provides flexibility to adapt and iterate processes quickly.
Charm implemented Manufacturo in just three months—much faster than traditional ERP systems. The platform enables real-time calculations, digital data capture, and structured validation through tablets.
Additionally, engineers write scripts and connect directly to the data, fostering continuous process improvements. Manufacturo links to machine systems via APIs, automating data collection and ensuring traceability. Embedded SOPs and redlines allow instant process updates, speeding learning and process refinement.
Engineering teams own their workflows, building custom scripts and analyzing live data independently. Charm integrates MRV (Measurement, Reporting, Verification) into Manufacturo for accurate tracking of emissions and biomass flows.
Site-to-site transfer and injection data are monitored securely, with role-based permissions ensuring localized control. Each site has its own dataset, enabling tailored operations without compromising overall integrity.
Looking ahead, Charm plans to increase bio-oil carbon density and reduce downtime with new pyrolyzer designs. Manufacturo remains central to their iterative, data-driven approach, supporting scalable, transparent carbon removal.
