London-based material innovator Biophilica has introduced Brightbond, a 100% biobased adhesive made from renewable resources. The company’s research and development team spent 18 months perfecting the formula, which boasts the same bonding performance as traditional PVA adhesives.
Brightbond is suitable for bonding a range of substrates, including Biophilica’s own plant-based material, Treekind, as well as paper, cardboard, textiles, wood, and conventional leather. The water-based formula is non-hazardous and non-toxic, making it an attractive option for manufacturers looking to reduce their environmental impact.
The adhesive’s unique properties allow it to dry clear with a slight tint, making it ideal for designers and manufacturers who prioritize aesthetics. Brightbond’s performance was tested through rigorous ISO peel and lap shear testing, as well as user testing by consumers around the world.
The development of Brightbond responds to a growing need for sustainable alternatives in the manufacturing process. Traditional adhesives often rely on toxic and petrochemical-based ingredients, which can harm the environment and human health. Biophilica’s mission is to facilitate the transition to circular, sustainably sourced products without compromising performance.
When Biophilica shared its biobased adhesive concept with brand partners, they received significant interest and feedback. The company’s commitment to sustainability and the excellent bonding properties of Brightbond led to its launch as a standalone product. Several brands have already purchased Brightbond and are conducting early industrial trials.
Brightbond underwent rigorous testing under ISO 11339 (T-Peel) and ISO 4587 (Lap Shear) standards, achieving impressive results. The adhesive was also tested by consumers on a variety of substrates around the world, including microfiber leather, bacterial cellulose, bio-based tiles, cotton, silk, and more.
By offering a biobased adhesive that meets industry standards for performance and sustainability, Biophilica aims to support manufacturers in their efforts to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high-quality products.
