Avantium N.V., a frontrunner in the realm of renewable and circular polymers, has announced a significant collaboration with Parfums Christian Dior, a luxury brand under the LVMH Group. This partnership marks a pivotal development in the cosmetics industry, as Dior will become the first brand to deploy Avantium’s innovative polymer, Releaf®, in its primary packaging.

The Releaf polymer, derived from plant sources as polyethylene furanoate (PEF), represents a shift towards more sustainable packaging options. Unlike traditional plastics, Releaf is a fully recyclable material that aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Its performance characteristics are noteworthy, providing excellent protection for cosmetic formulations while ensuring their quality is preserved.

This announcement closely follows the recent inauguration of Avantium’s first commercial production facility in Delfzijl, Netherlands, which took place on October 22, 2024. The plant is expected to begin commercial production in 2025, marking a significant milestone for both Avantium and the sustainable materials sector.

Karl Pays, Director of Research at LVMH Recherche, expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “The partnership with Avantium is set to revolutionize the cosmetics packaging landscape. Releaf embodies Dior’s aspirations toward sustainability and eco-design.”

Véronique Courtois, President and CEO of Parfums Christian Dior, emphasized the importance of integrating sustainable practices: “This launch is a critical step in our commitment to sustainability, reflecting our dedication to quality and sophistication.”

This collaboration marks a noteworthy advance in sustainability within the luxury cosmetics sector and highlights a growing trend toward the adoption of eco-friendly materials in consumer products.
