Vioneo and Honeywell collaborate on green methanol plastics production facility

Vioneo and Honeywell announced a partnership to integrate Honeywell’s advanced conversion technology at a new plastics production facility in Antwerp, Belgium. This facility aims to produce plastics using green methanol, reducing dependency on fossil fuel-derived feedstocks.

Honeywell’s methanol-to-olefin (MTO) tech will enable Vioneo to use green methanol composed only of biogenic carbon dioxide rather than traditional sources like coal and crude oil. This innovation is expected to lower carbon emissions associated with plastic production while generating essential olefins, including propylene and ethylene, which are crucial for the manufacturing of various everyday products.

Vioneo’s CEO, Alex Hogan, emphasized the potential for this initiative to lead the plastics industry towards cleaner, large-scale production methods by leveraging green methanol.

The planned investment for the Antwerp facility is approximately €1.5 billion, which will utilize renewable energy-based hydrogen and biomaterials as feedstock, along with renewable electricity.

Honeywell UOP President, Rajesh Gattupalli, highlighted that Vioneo’s project could position Europe as a leader in sustainable industrial innovation and align with the European Union’s climate objectives.
