Innovative materials supplier Toray has unveiled its latest advancement in eco-conscious design with the APURE autonomous shuttle, which employs plant-based materials to enhance sustainability in public transport.
Toray has incorporated this partially plant-based polyester into the APURE project. Currently, Ultrasuede products in the automotive sector use approximately 30% plant-based materials, a figure expected to rise as supply chain issues are resolved. This move aligns with Toray’s goal to achieve 100% plant-based polyester.
Since becoming the first manufacturer of plant-based nonwoven suede in 2015, Toray has transitioned over half of its sales volume to more sustainable materials. The APURE shuttle, developed in collaboration with German design firm Neomind, signifies a pivotal step towards realizing a fully sustainable transportation future.
The APURE shuttle emphasizes passenger comfort and durability, featuring an interior designed to “evoke feelings of tranquility”. Toray’s Ultrasuede nu replicates the look and feel of premium leather while ensuring easy maintenance and durability suitable for frequent use.
This environmentally friendly upholstery not only improves passenger well-being but also complements Toray’s 2024 Automotive Collection theme titled ‘Greener.’
In September 2024, the APURE concept won a Red Dot design award, recognized for its eco-friendly interior design that incorporates partially plant-based and recycled materials. With a prototype displayed at InnoTrans in Berlin, Toray affirmed its commitment to advancing synthetic organic chemistry, biotechnology, and nanotechnology to further develop sustainable materials.
