Sensei Farms, a sustainable agriculture company based on the island of Lanai, has unveiled a new biobased packaging solution designed to reduce the company’s plastic footprint and combat plastic pollution.
The packaging, which is made from 91% responsibly sourced biobased materials, is one of the first of its kind to be developed in Hawaii and the United States. It features an industry-first see-through base that allows consumers to view the product from all angles, as well as a peel-and-reseal feature that helps maintain freshness and prevent waste.
The biobased paperboard packaging, which is over 90% less plastic than traditional options, will initially be used for Sensei Farms’ leafy green products, including Lanai Mix, Arugula, Butter Leaf, Cherry Red Lettuce, Crisp Leaf Lettuce, Leafy Green Lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, and Zesty Blend.
Hawaii, like many other parts of the world, faces significant challenges related to plastic pollution. The state’s reliance on imported goods and the lack of in-state plastic recycling facilities contribute to the problem. By adopting this new packaging solution, Sensei Farms is taking a proactive step to reduce its environmental impact and support a more sustainable future.
