DePoly, a Swiss cleantech company, plans to open a 500-tonne-per-year plastic recycling plant in Monthey, Switzerland. The facility is scheduled to launch this summer. It aims to demonstrate the industrial application of DePoly’s technology that converts PET and polyester waste into virgin-quality raw materials. This process does not rely on fossil fuels.
The plant will showcase DePoly’s proprietary method of transforming plastic waste into high-quality monomers. These monomers can be used to produce new PET bottles, fibers, and packaging. The technology has already been tested in partnerships with companies like Odlo, PTI, and others. These collaborations confirmed that the recycled materials meet industry standards.
DePoly’s process offers an alternative to traditional virgin plastics. It produces oil-equivalent raw materials from waste, supporting the circular economy. Samantha Anderson, CEO and co-founder, said the showcase plant is a step toward larger-scale operations. The company aims to build a commercial plant by 2027 that processes more waste volumes.
The company has secured $23 million in seed funding, with MassMutual Ventures joining a second funding round. This brings DePoly’s total raised funds to over $30 million, including grants. Existing investors include BASF Venture Capital, Beiersdorf, and others. The new funding supports DePoly’s goal of becoming a global leader in sustainable plastics recycling.
Industry experts see DePoly’s technology as a potential game changer. David Hanf, CFO since 2024, stated that the company’s process could compete with virgin plastics at scale. He emphasized the importance of rapid scaling for market success.
DePoly’s innovation aims to reduce reliance on fossil resources and cut plastic waste. The company has received recognition, including being named a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer. Its efforts contribute to advancing sustainable, circular plastics markets worldwide.
