MycoWorks introduces Reishi biomaterial in luxury furniture design

MycoWorks launched Reishi™, a new biomaterial, in the realm of interior design. On April 3rd, Ligne Roset showcased the Kobold sofa at the Onirium event in Paris, marking the first large-scale integration of Reishi into luxury furniture.

This event demonstrates Reishi’s progress from experimental development to a commercially viable solution capable of meeting high standards of design and craftsmanship.

As a natural, non-animal material available at industrial scale, Reishi delivers performance, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Traditionally, biomaterials face limitations in terms of durability and broad application. However, Reishi uses MycoWorks’ patented Fine Mycelium™ tech to achieve visual and technical excellence.

Ligne Roset selected Reishi for the Kobold sofa due to its robust characteristics. The material is resistant to everyday wear and combines strength with flexibility. Additionally, Reishi develops a natural “patina” over time, enhancing its aesthetic while maintaining structural integrity.

Unlike many alternative biomaterial, Reishi is available at scale, positioning it as a sustainable option for major design brands. Sophia Wang, co-founder of MycoWorks, noted that the integration of Reishi demonstrates the feasibility of sustainable luxury in contemporary design.

The Kobold sofa, now included in the Ligne Roset 2025 catalog, shows Reishi’s capability to provide both performance and style in sustainable interiors. Antoine Roset, Managing Director of Ligne Roset, stated that the partnership with MycoWorks reflects a commitment to ethical development and high-quality standards.

Designed by Erwan Bouroullec, the Kobold is a versatile, modular seating solution that incorporates various functional elements. The use of Reishi in this design emphasizes a commitment to eco-conscious innovation while retaining high aesthetic and comfort standards.

This initiative marks an ongoing effort by MycoWorks to offer scalable, sustainable materials that meet luxury market demands, paving the way for a new category of natural materials in furniture design.
