Cemvita expands biotech operations in Brazil with REMA partnership

Cemvita, a leader in industrial biotech, has announced a collaboration with REMA, a Brazilian research institution located in Florianópolis. The partnership aims to enhance Cemvita’s platform for evaluating and testing carbon waste streams as feedstocks for sustainable oil production.

REMA is affiliated with the Federal University of Santa Catarina and focuses on environmental and technological solutions. The institution employs multidisciplinary teams across various fields, including environmental engineering, automation, chemical engineering, agronomy, and biotech. Together, the two organizations reinforce their commitment to advancing the circular bioeconomy.

This partnership builds on Cemvita’s recent initiatives in Brazil. In 2024, Cemvita expanded its operations to this country, establishing a subsidiary to contribute to sustainable energy solutions. The expansion aligns with Brazil’s progressive regulatory framework, including the “Fuel of the Future” Law enacted in 2024. This law promotes biodiesel blending and the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Using waste as a feedstock is crucial for a sustainable future. By repurposing carbon waste streams, Cemvita’s technology reduces reliance on fossil resources. This minimizes environmental impact and contributes to a circular economy where waste is transformed into valuable products. 

Brazil’s leadership in the circular bioeconomy is underscored by its role as the host of COP30. This United Nations Climate Change Conference will take place in November 2025. The event highlights Brazil’s commitment to sustainable development and positions the nation as a hub for bioeconomic innovation.

Dr. Marcio Busi da Silva, Cemvita’s CTO, emphasized the long-standing partnership with professors Dr. Marcio Schneider and Dr. Admir Giachini from REMA. “This collaboration reflects our strong professional ties and commitment to advancing science and technology for a more sustainable future,” he stated.
