Avantium N.V., a leader in renewable and circular polymers, has signed a conditional five-year offtake agreement with PLIXXENT. PLIXXENT is a major producer of polyurethane systems. Under this deal, PLIXXENT will buy FDCA from Avantium’s FDCA Flagship Plant. The FDCA will be used to make foams for insulation materials.
FDCA is a fully plant-based monomer. It is emerging as a promising building block for sustainable materials. PLIXXENT has tested its use in polyester polyols and insulation polyurethane foams. FDCA-based insulation foam offers clear environmental benefits over petrochemical foams.
It meets the increasing demand for eco-friendly building materials. The foam performs well in thermal conductivity and flame resistance. It also has good mechanical strength and dimensional stability. This ensures the foam stays effective and retains its structure over time.
Jörg Schottek, CEO of PLIXXENT, said: “We are excited to work with Avantium. Integrating FDCA into our insulation foam shows our commitment to sustainability and innovation. It allows us to offer high-performance, environmentally friendly solutions to our customers.”
Tom van Aken, CEO of Avantium, added: “This agreement with PLIXXENT marks our entry into the building materials sector. It highlights the versatility of FDCA. We see growing interest in FDCA across industries and regions. We are pleased to see how these sustainable materials can transform everyday products and support a greener future.”
