ASAFA and World Bioenergy Association to promote SAF in Asia

The Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Association (ASAFA) has partnered with the World Bioenergy Association (WBA). This partnership will promote sustainable bioenergy practices. Together, they aim to enhance the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) across the Asia-Pacific region.

The aviation industry faces significant pressure to reduce emissions and meet net-zero targets by 2050. In this context, biofuel-based SAF offers a critical solution. It can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fossil jet fuel.

This collaboration aims to combine WBA’s global expertise with ASAFA’s regional knowledge. They plan to boost SAF deployment and advance sustainable bioenergy. Their objectives include promoting regional collaboration and facilitating technical exchanges. This will be achieved through joint workshops and policy discussions. Best practices related to feedstock diversification and biomass supply chains will also be shared.

The partnership will advocate for policy frameworks that encourage investment and de-risk projects. This will help to support the scaling of SAF technologies. Furthermore, they will strengthen connections among stakeholders. This includes airlines, fuel producers, government agencies, researchers, NGOs, and financiers in the bioenergy and aviation sectors.

Bharadwaj Kummamuru, Executive Director of WBA, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. He stated that they will use their combined resources to promote sustainable bioenergy in Asia’s aviation sector. He emphasized that deploying SAF from sustainable biomass is crucial for decarbonization targets.

Gabriel Ho, Chief Sustainability Officer of ASAFA, noted that this partnership enhances their ability to advance biobased SAF. He said aligning with global bioenergy standards aims to drive change in Asia’s aviation industry. This collaboration could lead to significant emissions reductions and a sustainable path to net-zero aviation.

Overall, this partnership underscores ASAFA’s commitment to fostering collaboration and technological innovation. It aims to lead efforts for a low-carbon future in aviation. Moreover, it seeks to promote sustainable bioeconomy initiatives across Asia.
