BioCirc opens world’s largest biogas-based CCS plant in Denmark

Danish biogas company BioCirc has opened what it describes as the world’s largest biogas-based carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant, located in Vesthimmerland, Denmark.

The facility is the first of five CCS installations planned across BioCirc’s biogas portfolio, forming the backbone of the company’s bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) platform. At full rollout, the programme will cover five of BioCirc’s eight biogas plants, including Favrskov, Haderslev, Grønhøj and Vinkel Biogas.

The Vesthimmerland plant captures 32,500 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The gas is captured during biogas production, liquefied and transported by ship to INEOS’s Greensand Future storage site in the Danish North Sea, where it is permanently injected deep beneath the seabed.

“The inauguration of the Vesthimmerland CCS plant marks the first important step in BioCirc’s overall BECCS rollout,” said CEO Bertel Maigaard. “When all plants are operational, BioCirc will contribute to the capture and permanent storage of CO₂ from biogas at significant scale.”

The project establishes a complete value chain from decentralised carbon capture to offshore permanent storage. BioCirc says the approach enables cost-effective CO₂ removal while generating negative emissions at scale. The company also sees the platform as a way to support decarbonisation in hard-to-abate sectors including agriculture, shipping and heavy road transport.

The project has received support from the Danish Energy Agency through the NECCS funding pool.

BioCirc says the BECCS platform builds on its existing biogas operations, allowing the company to extract additional value streams from assets already in production.
