EU to embrace bioenergy as key to net-zero future

Daniela Castillo Monagas

The European Union is being called upon to prioritize bioenergy as a crucial component of its transition to a net-zero future. The “It’s Possible” campaign, launched by Bioenergy Europe, highlights the critical role bioenergy plays in reducing emissions, creating jobs, and strengthening energy security.

According to Jean-Marc Jossart, Secretary General of Bioenergy Europe, bioenergy remains the largest renewable energy source in Europe and the largest indigenous energy source. In 2023, the EU avoided importing over 17 billion liters of liquefied natural gas thanks to the use of wood pellets.

The campaign emphasizes bioenergy’s potential to drive the EU’s energy transition and outlines a roadmap for achieving net-zero ambitions. This includes:

  • Accelerating decarbonization through bio-based carbon removal technologies, such as Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)
  • Modernizing heating systems by replacing fossil-based infrastructure with innovative bioheat technologies
  • Strengthening energy security by promoting the use of locally sourced biomass, reducing dependency on volatile fossil fuel imports
  • Securing a sustainable biomass supply chain to support both the bioeconomy and the EU’s climate objectives

Bioenergy contributes to the competitiveness of European industries by providing a cost-effective, reliable, and renewable energy source. It offers practical solutions for reducing emissions while maintaining productivity and meeting environmental standards.
