VITAGRO begins exporting Ukrainian biomethane to the EU

The VITAGRO Group has commenced the export of Ukrainian biomethane to the European Union. This follows the completion of its biomethane plant, built between 2022 and 2024, which began production in September 2024.

Prior to exports, the company injected biomethane into Ukraine’s gas transmission system. Energy Resources of Ukraine (ERU) in collaboration with its partners, will transport the biomethane from the Ukrainian-Slovak border to Germany.

The plant utilizes 100% livestock waste and is expected to produce 3 million m³ of biomethane annually. This amount is equivalent to the annual gas consumption of approximately 2,000 German households.

ERU stated, “Our market flexibility and logistics expertise are unlocking the full potential of Ukrainian biomethane.” The company expressed confidence that the test delivery will facilitate the acceptance of Ukrainian biomethane in the EU market.

Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Mykola Kolysnyk, highlighted the export as a result of legislative harmonization between Ukraine and the EU. He described it as a crucial step toward replacing Russian gas in Europe.

“Cooperation with European colleagues in the energy sector is a government priority,” Kolysnyk said. He added that Ukraine aims to secure a positive decision from the European Commission regarding the operation of Ukrainian producers through the Union Data Base.

Georgiy Geletukha, Chairman of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, noted that this first export opens a promising market for Ukrainian businesses. He asserted, “Ukraine has the potential to become a reliable supplier of biomethane to the European market.”
