Viridis Chemical has announced plans to relocate its renewable chemicals plant from Columbus, Nebraska, to Peoria, Illinois. The company specializes in biobased and low-carbon chemical technologies and has received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2024 Green Chemistry Challenge Award.
The new facility in Peoria will be co-located with BioUrja Renewables’ high-purity alcohol plant. The plant will utilize corn-based industrial alcohols from BioUrja to produce renewable ethyl acetate, a chemical often derived from fossil fuels in conventional manufacturing processes.
The Peoria site, located on the Illinois River, offers logistical advantages, including access to major rail lines and barge-navigable routes that connect to the Mississippi River. This location is intended to improve operational efficiency by bringing the facility closer to key customers in the Midwest and Northeast regions.
Patrick Killian, CEO of Viridis, stated that the relocation is aimed at enhancing the company’s competitiveness and operational capabilities. He emphasized the potential for better customer service and opportunities for growth in other product lines.
Amit Bhandari, founder of BioUrja Group, expressed support for the collaboration and indicated the potential for developing a hub for sustainable products in Peoria.
Investors from EIV Capital also backed the move, citing a belief in the business model focused on providing renewable-based solvents and intermediates.
The relocation of the ethyl acetate plant is expected to be completed by late 2025, furthering Viridis’ role within the renewable chemicals industry and addressing market demands for sustainable solutions.
