Vaulted Deep partners with Microsoft to remove nearly 5 million tons of CO₂ over 12 years

Vaulted Deep, a waste management company, announced a new deal with Microsoft. Vaulted will deliver up to 4.9 million tonnes of permanent CO₂ removal over 12 years. The agreement lasts until 2038 and helps Vaulted expand its proven method across the U.S.

Vaulted stores organic waste deep underground to permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere. They partner with cities, industries, and farms to manage waste like biosolids and manure. The waste is injected into deep rock layers to ensure it stays stored forever. This process also cuts methane emissions and prevents pollutants like PFAS from reaching the environment.

Julia Reichelstein, CEO of Vaulted, said solutions must scale safely and address real problems. Vaulted’s technology solves waste issues and helps meet climate goals effectively. Their method uses existing infrastructure, making large-scale deployment safer and cheaper.

Vaulted has removed nearly 18,000 tonnes of CO₂ so far. They diverted over 69,000 tonnes of waste from landfills and incineration. Their certified process guarantees each tonne stays underground for at least 1,000 years.

Brian Marrs from Microsoft praised Vaulted’s scalable and safe approach to carbon removal. Vaulted’s technology has operated safely since 2008 in several states. It was first used in Los Angeles to process 20% of the city’s biosolids.

In Kansas, Vaulted manages most of Derby’s biosolids and farm manure. They reduce nutrient runoff and odors while sequestering carbon effectively. Recent upgrades allow their Great Plains site to triple waste processing capacity. This expansion has created jobs and invested over $5 million locally.

The U.S. produces over one billion tons of organic waste annually. Vaulted is seeking new partners to manage more hard-to-handle waste. By expanding its efforts, Vaulted aims to make a significant impact on climate change.
