SMX PLC, a pioneer in molecular “physical-to-digital” fingerprinting for supply-chain transparency, announced a strategic partnership with Bio-Packaging Pte Ltd. Bio-Packaging is a Singaporean manufacturer of polyethylene, recycled, biodegradable, and certified compostable packaging. Founded in 2007, Bio-Packaging supplies supermarkets, food-service operators, and retailers with ISO 14001-accredited solutions.
The collaboration involves embedding SMX’s invisible molecular marker into Bio-Packaging’s PCR, biodegradable, and compostable products. This marker creates a tamper-proof “digital twin” that is scanned at various stages. Each scan records a verified proof of origin, material type, recycling process, and composting results on SMX’s blockchain platform in real time.
Lim Qin Jie, Director of Business Development at Bio-Packaging, explained that their customers trust them for practical, cost-effective packaging that meets Singapore’s strict environmental standards. By combining SMX’s traceability technology with their PCR, biodegradable, and compostable offerings, they can now provide indisputable evidence that their products fulfill their eco-promises.
The data generated aligns with Singapore’s upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for packaging and supports global plastic tax reporting. Additionally, the embedded metadata offers anti-greenwashing assurance, verifying claims of biodegradability and recycled content. This is expected to build greater consumer trust.
SMX and Bio-Packaging aim to help local converters access data that can speed Singapore’s shift toward a zero-waste circular economy. The companies plan to work with government agencies and industry groups to expand the platform across more substrates and sectors. Their goal is to make transparent, accountable packaging the standard across Asia-Pacific and beyond, fostering a sustainable supply chains.
