Sasol introduces bio-circular insect oil surfactant for cleaning industries

Sasol International Chemicals announced the launch of LIVINEX IO 7, a pioneering bio-circular surfactant. This innovative product is derived from insect oils and is palm-free and deforestation-free. It is now available for commercial use, primarily targeting the care chemicals markets across Europe.

LIVINEX IO 7 is the first nonionic surfactant of its kind in the fabric, home care, industrial, and institutional cleaning sectors. This patent-pending product transforms insect oil—by-product of sustainable protein production for animal feed—into a valuable chemical feedstock. It offers a sustainable alternative to traditional oleochemicals derived from palm oil or other plant sources.

Louis Snyders, Vice President of Care Chemicals at Sasol, stated that LIVINEX IO 7 broadens Sasol’s portfolio of sustainable offerings. He emphasized that the surfactant demonstrates Sasol’s innovation skills and commitment to helping customers meet evolving sustainability requirements. LIVINEX IO 7 is a drop-in replacement for conventional C1214-based chemistry, allowing easy integration into existing formulations.

Unlike other natural surfactants that often require reformulation, LIVINEX IO 7 can be seamlessly incorporated into current cleaning products. It is made from oil obtained from black soldier fly larvae, which is rich in fatty acids used to produce detergent-grade alcohols. Since insect oil chemistry matches that of vegetable oil, mature technology and existing manufacturing processes can be employed, avoiding land use change or food crop competition.

Snyders added that as global demand for sustainable products grows, Sasol plans to continue exploring and commercializing innovations like LIVINEX IO 7. The company aims to offer a diverse mix of high-performing synthetic and renewable solutions, aligning with its focus on sustainable resource use.
