Pirelli has equipped the new McLaren W1 supercar with three special tyres made from over 50% bio-based and recycled materials. This project marks a major step for Pirelli as these are the first supercar tyres made with over 50% bio-based and recycled materials. It is part of Pirelli’s plan to use 80% sustainable materials by 2030.
The company introduced the P Zero E in 2023, the first high-performance tyre with over 55% bio-based and recycled content. It also earned a triple “A” European label.
The development process began with virtual testing. Using advanced driving simulations, engineers evaluated tyre performance in different conditions. They then moved to real-world tests on various tracks. Locations included Italy’s Nardò circuit, Spain’s Idiada track, and Sweden’s Sottozero Centre. These sites helped test the tyres under extreme conditions, as the goal was to ensure high performance in real life.
The tyres are designed specifically for the McLaren W1, a supercar with hybrid engine that can deliver up to 1,275PS and 1,340Nm. It can accelerate from 0 to 300 km/h in less than 12.7 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 350 km/h. The car has a Race mode that creates up to 1,000 kg of downforce. This demands the best tyre technology for safety and grip at high speeds.
All three tyres serve different needs. The P Zero R is for daily driving, offering comfort and durability. P Zero Trofeo RS is track-focused, providing high grip and handling. The P Zero Winter 2 is designed for winter conditions and colder weather. They are all produced at Pirelli’s plant in Settimo Torinese, Italy.
This innovation highlights Pirelli’s commitment to sustainability. The tyres feature a special logo, showing they contain at least 50% sustainable materials. Pirelli’s focus is on combining high performance with environmental care.
