New tequila brand, Laelia, focuses on sustainable production

Laelia Tequila, a new brand from Casa Natima, has launched with a strong focus on sustainable practices. The company, based in Amatitán, Jalisco, is entirely operated by a Mexican team. Laelia emphasizes environmentally responsible methods throughout its production process. They aim to significantly minimize their environmental footprint in crafting tequila.

The brand carefully sources agave from Jalisco. This specific agave is certified by Environmentally Responsible Agave, confirming the agave is not harvested from deforested land. Instead, Casa Natima directly oversees the cultivation of this agave and they implement their own sustainability initiatives on their farms. These include: various water conservation techniques, natural composting methods, and organic fertilizers. This approach helps maintain healthy soil conditions.

Laelia’s distillation process incorporates significant renewable energy sources. Recycled agave fibers, known as bagasse, are used as biofuel. Bagasse contributes 80% of the energy needed for Laelia’s production. This natural fuel efficiently produces steam for the boilers and 100% of the agave fibers are fully reused. They are utilized as natural compost. Sustainable materials like bio-pallets for shipping are also created. A state-of-the-art filtration system effectively recycles water. This recycled water is then converted into steam.

Laelia is actively committed to enhancing its sustainability efforts further. The company plans to fully recycle and reuse all production water. They aim to completely eliminate the need for additional water use by 2030.

“We aim to lead the path for what a modern tequila rooted in preserving the craft and tradition of the spirit can be by ensuring to highlight agave in its purest form. To do so, we’re devoted to pushing the boundaries of tequila innovation by continuing to refine Laelia sustainably, using thoughtful innovations to improve the quality and consistency of each bottle and our impact on the land,” said Fernando Pérez Ontiveros, CEO and Founder.
