IEDA boosts community water infrastructure with new grants

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) announced that over $3.7 million in grants has been allocated to the communities of Chelsea, Duncombe, Fort Madison, Lawler, McGregor, Mediapolis, Wellman, and Yale to support water and sewer infrastructure projects via the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

“Having a dependable water system is crucial for ensuring that Iowa families have access to clean, safe water and that local businesses can thrive,” stated IEDA and Iowa Finance Authority Director Debi Durham. “By investing in these upgrades, we are laying the groundwork for stronger communities, both now and for future generations who will live in these areas.”

The CDBG program is funded by the federal government through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, with IEDA overseeing the distribution of these funds in the state’s non-metropolitan regions.

CDBG funds help facilitate essential improvements to water and sewer systems, enhance housing conditions for low-income homeowners, create facilities for disabled and at-risk individuals, and implement significant downtown revitalization projects.

IEDA received 19 applications requesting a total of $8,631,050 in funding. Grants are awarded based on criteria including the benefits to low- and moderate-income individuals, financial need, the potential impact of the project, and the preparedness and commitment of local resources for the initiative.
