Gucci offers watches made from bioplastics

Luxury fashion brand Gucci has taken further steps towards its circular goals with its new line of timepieces. The new bio-based Dive watches are made from an unexpectedly sustainable material.

These four new additions to its line of Dive watches continue to express the playful aesthetic of the Italian fashion house. Moreover, “the unisex 40mm timepieces are also part of the brand’s commitment to generating a positive change for people and our planet, having been crafted with bio-based plastic that moves the company towards its circular goals”.

The bio-based plastic used to produce these timepieces is one that has been made from renewable and natural, plant-derived sources. The new bio-based materials make up a minimum of 46% of the Gucci Dive bracelet, as well as 65% of its case. Meanwhile, other elements including the crown, buckle and caseback are manufactured from recycled steel.

Creating a watch that is friendlier to the environment is among the multiple initiatives of Gucci’s worldwide environmental and social sustainability programme, which aims to cover every facet of the house’s supply chain. Several other luxury watchmakers have also looked to incorporate recycled materials in their pieces, as an endeavour to make their production and the consumer’s enjoyment of timepieces more sustainable. This shows the fashion industry is migrating towards embracing a more eco-conscious way of making timepieces.

The Gucci Dive watches are offered in four colours of aquamarine, natural moss green, matte white and transparent, and feature a rubber-like plastic strap that brings a sporty, youthful and contemporary feel to them. The interlocking GG logo and motifs of bees and stars, which are both house emblems, are used instead of numerals or index hour markers. Housing a Swiss-made automatic movement that can be seen via the transparent dial and caseback, the watches are water-resistant up to 200m and boast a power reserve of 38 hours. They also feature phosphorescent elements in the dial, case and hour markers for legibility, since they are essentially diver’s watches at their core.
