Green Plains Inc. has successfully commenced production of dextrose syrups using its Clean Sugar Technology™ (CST™) at the first commercial facility of its kind in Shenandoah, Iowa. This innovative system, developed by Fluid Quip Technologies, produces corn syrups with carbon-intensity reductions of up to 40% compared to conventional methods, targeting applications in renewable chemicals, biobased materials, and food and beverage sectors.
CEO Todd Becker hailed the launch as a transformative moment, stating, “The successful start of Clean Sugar Technology, combined with the first dextrose from a dry mill, marks a new era for Green Plains and the sugar industry.” The company aims to meet rising demand with its focus on low carbon-intensity ingredients, highlighting a commitment to sustainability.
The dextrose and glucose syrups produced have shown promise as feedstocks for bio-products and food ingredients. Green Plains is in advanced negotiations for multiple offtake partnerships, with demand already exceeding production capacity at the facility.
Bulk shipments of these new syrups are expected to begin in the coming weeks. The facility has attained third-party certification for current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), with FSSC 22000 certification anticipated next quarter. Plans are in place to optimize production in the following months.
