Denali, a leader in organic waste recycling in the United States, has unveiled ReCirculate, a compost and organic potting soil product derived from food waste collected from grocery stores. The product is set to hit retail shelves in one cubic foot bags starting January 2025.
Using innovative depackaging technology, Denali effectively separates organic food waste from its packaging, allowing the company to transform discarded materials into nutrient-rich compost and potting soil. This initiative aims to address the significant environmental challenge posed by food waste, which accounts for approximately 24% of municipal solid waste in the U.S., according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). When food waste breaks down in landfills, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas with a much higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide.
Todd Mathes, Denali’s CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “ReCirculate harnesses the nutrients in organic waste to support eco-friendly gardening and landscaping, while fostering a circular economy. This product encourages consumers to make sustainable choices while providing retailers an opportunity to repurpose food waste, ultimately reducing their carbon footprint.”
Denali’s partnerships span from major retailers to regional businesses, all benefiting from its advanced depackaging services. In 2023, the company successfully recycled 14 billion pounds of organic material, including 1.7 billion pounds of food waste, showcasing its efficiency in diverting waste from landfills.
With ReCirculate, consumers can feel confident that they are contributing to a more sustainable future by using a product that not only promotes healthy soil but also mitigates the environmental impact of food waste.
