CycleØ, a European developer and operator of biogas plants, is expanding its investments in Spain’s biogas sector. The company plans to build, own, and operate up to 30 new biogas plants, in addition to its three existing facilities and a gas grid injection point.
This €200 million investment aims to produce a combined output of 800 GWh per year, significantly addressing the 75% gap between current and targeted renewable gas production in Spain. The current operational capacity stands at 2.74 TWh, with a goal of reaching 10.4 TWh by 2030, as outlined in the Hoja de Ruta del Biogás policy published in 2022.
Currently, Spain has nine biomethane plants, far fewer than France’s 675, Germany’s 254, and Italy’s 133. CycleØ is actively contributing to increasing awareness of biogas benefits within the Spanish farming community through its involvement in the EU-funded ALFA project, which promotes biogas production from livestock farming.
CycleØ operates three plants in Lleida, Catalonia, and plans to use its proprietary upgrading and liquefaction technology to convert gas into biomethane. These new plants will be strategically located in regions such as Catalonia, Aragón, and Galicia.
The investment will create additional grid injection points, enabling direct injection of upgraded gas into the Spanish gas grid, thus aiding in network decarbonization. The facilities are expected to meet the gas needs of around 123,000 households.
CEO Laurence Molke stated, “We recognize the significant gap in biogas capacity in Spain. We are committed to long-term investment in this sector.” Managing director Jordi Berengué added, “We’re pleased to share our knowledge to support biogas development in the Spanish farming community.
