Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners invests in Finland’s largest biogas plant

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has finalized an investment in Finland’s largest biogas plant, Nivalan Biokaasu. This investment marks CIP’s third in its CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (CI ABF I), and its first outside Denmark. The project aligns with the fund’s goals of capital deployment and greenfield development.

The Finnish government granted significant capital expenses funding in 2024, emphasizing the plant’s national importance. When operational, Nivalan Biokaasu will produce over 200 GWh of biomethane annually. This will displace up to 38,000 tons of fossil CO₂ each year.

Construction is set to begin in late 2025, with operations starting in late 2027. The plant will process more than 600,000 tons of organic waste each year. It will convert agricultural and industrial waste into biomethane, supporting Finland’s energy independence and green transition.

Thomas Dalsgaard, CIP partner, expressed enthusiasm about the project. He noted that Nivalan Biokaasu represents a milestone for the fund and its investors. The plant will contribute to energy security, job creation, and rural investment growth.

Dalsgaard also highlighted collaboration with local farmers and authorities, emphasizing the project’s community benefits. The biogas plant’s development signals a strong move toward sustainable, renewable energy sources.
