Verde Resources, a leader in sustainable infrastructure, and the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) are sharing early insights from a Biochar-Asphalt test section installed at NCAT’s Test Track since December 2024.
The test section features Verde’s proprietary Cold-Mix Biochar Asphalt. It is a world-first use of an asphalt material designed to sequester carbon while maintaining strength and flexibility for roads. Initial results indicate good durability and resilience, especially for low-volume traffic applications.
Nathan Moore, NCAT’s Assistant Director for Test Track Research, said, “Few materials have shown as much carbon reduction potential as Verde’s Biochar Asphalt. It’s the first on the track with a carbon sequestration component. After nearly 50,000 ESALs (equivalent single axle loads) of heavy truck traffic, the surface remains flexible and performs consistently. It looks well-suited for local roads and subdivisions with light traffic.”
While early data is promising for light-duty use, ongoing tests are evaluating its performance for medium- and high-traffic roads as part of NCAT’s multi-year cycle.
Jack Wong, CEO of Verde Resources, commented, “It’s early days, but the positive feedback and validation pace are incredibly energizing. Less than a year into testing, this highlights the strength of our material and its extraordinary potential through science and purpose-driven innovation.”
Verde’s Biochar-Asphalt is also the first in the world to generate verified Carbon Removal Credits, certified by Puro.earth and purchased earlier this year by a major financial institution. This positions Verde as a pioneer in transforming asphalt from a traditional pollutant into a climate-positive material that actively reduces Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions across the construction chain.
Verde envisions road infrastructure as a scalable climate solution, turning roads and pathways into carbon sinks. To advance this vision, the company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions, North America’s largest liquid asphalt producer.
