Birla Cellulose, the cellulosic fibres division of the Aditya Birla Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Circ, a US-based innovator in textile-to-textile recycling. This collaboration aims to accelerate the integration of recycled fibres within the textile industry, addressing the growing demand for sustainable materials.
Under the agreement, Birla Cellulose intends to purchase up to 5,000 tons of Circ’s pulp annually for a period of five years from Circ’s first commercial-scale facility. The pulp will be utilized to produce lyocell staple fibre, facilitating increased access to recycled materials and supporting Circ’s efforts to scale its commercial operations.
Peter Majeranowski, CEO of Circ, stated that the partnership highlights the company’s progress towards achieving scalability in the recycling sector and reinforces the industry’s commitment to a circular economy. He noted, “Together, we are poised to create a more sustainable fashion future by integrating recycled materials into textiles on the global stage.”
Dr. Aspi Patel, Chief Technology Officer of Grasim Industries Limited, emphasized the environmental significance of the collaboration. He remarked that the partnership reflects a commitment to innovation in the textile sector and aims to enhance the potential for a genuinely circular economy through the combination of Circ’s recycling technology and Birla Cellulose’s fibres.
As consumer preferences shift towards eco-friendly options, the supply chain’s role is becoming increasingly important in supporting sustainable practices. The alliance between Birla Cellulose and Circ represents a collaborative effort to expand recycling initiatives in the fashion industry. With demand for recycled materials exceeding current supply, this partnership ensures that Birla Cellulose’s customers will have access to high-quality recycled Circ Lyocell.
Both companies are dedicated to promoting circular economy practices and minimizing environmental impact through innovative technologies and material reuse. They share a vision for a sustainable future in the textile industry and aim to establish new standards within the sector.
