Shanghai Zelixir Biotechnology Co., Ltd (Zelixir) has launched a new manufacturing facility in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. The plant combines artificial intelligence (AI) with synthetic biology to produce a range of biobased raw materials for various industries.
The facility’s capabilities are expected to accelerate the production of natural flavorings, functional food ingredients, and beauty products. The company’s focus on enzyme synthesis and biomanufacturing aims to provide sustainable alternatives to traditional production methods.
Zelixir’s first commercial product, Sustainable Natural Vanillin ex-Ferulic Acid, is nearing large-scale production. This product uses AI-optimized enzymes and eco-friendly processes to create a rich vanilla scent profile. Its certification by FEMA GRAS under the FDA ensures its safety for use in food and cosmetics.
The rapid development of this product from project initiation to large-scale production in just one and a half years demonstrates the industrial capabilities of AI biomanufacturing. The company plans to scale up production to meet global demand and address flavor upgrade needs in the food and cosmetics industries.
Integrating AI and biotechnology can transform the biomanufacturing industry, enabling more efficient and sustainable production of chemicals, materials, and energy.
