Hengxin Life Science & Technology and Phabuilder Biotechnology have received a multi-million-dollar order, marking one of the largest in the polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) industry to date. The aim of this alliance is to showcase the versatility of PHA and transform everyday products. The collaboration brings together Phabuilder’s expertise in synthetic biology and Hengxin Life’s position as a global leader in biodegradable products. The introduction of PHA-based straws, coatings, and injection-molded items into the consumer market is a significant milestone in promoting sustainable alternatives and reducing marine plastic pollution.

Phabuilder, which originated from Tsinghua University’s R&D team in China, has developed a team of experts dedicated to bioengineering PHA for tableware. The PHA straws they have recently released can withstand temperatures beyond 90°C, meeting the demand for sustainable hot drink solutions. With its bio-based nature, PHA proves to be a meaningful and viable green choice as society becomes more environmentally conscious. The company’s low-carbon and chemical-free approach to product development reinforces the ecological soundness and reliability of their PHA-based offerings, as evidenced by certifications from respected organizations like TÜV AUSTRIA, BPI, and European DIN.

Phabuilder Biotechnology, with its mission “From Microbes to a Green Future,” is pioneering advancements in PHA development. The company’s new brand initiative, announced at the 3rd PHA World Congress, focuses on diversifying PHA applications. This initiative includes three core aspects: PHAmily, PHAbrary, and PHAdustry. PHAmily explores the potential of PHA polymers, PHAbrary encompasses diverse research, and PHAdustry focuses on industrial-scale production. Through collaboration with global partners, this initiative aims to accelerate the exploration, development, and commercial applications of PHA biopolymers in alignment with global sustainability objectives.

Chairwoman Xu mentioned, “As society becomes more attuned to environmental concerns, there’s a clear trend towards responsible and sustainable alternatives. Our PHA-based offerings, developed via a low-carbon, chemical-free approach, respond to this demand. They seamlessly connect consumer choices with environmental responsibilities.” To ensure the ecological soundness and reliability of its products, Phabuilder has obtained certifications from well-respected organizations like TÜV AUSTRIA, BPI, and European DIN, solidifying the products’ biodegradability and biocompostability.
