The World Biogas Association (WBA) has announced a partnership with the Global Methane Hub (GMH) to develop two key initiatives aimed at accelerating the adoption of biogas technologies such as anaerobic digestion.
Under its 2023 #MakingBiogasHappen programme, the WBA announced a series of interlinked initiatives aimed at rapidly accelerating biogas adoption and removing barriers to growth.
Supported by corporate partners TotalEnergies and GHD Engineering, the International AD Certification Scheme (ADCS International) and the Biogas Regulatory Framework can now be developed, thanks to funding from the GMH.
The Biogas Regulatory Framework aims to standardise and control the global biogas industry, offering an adaptable template for country-specific deployment.
ADCS International introduces the world’s first biogas-specific Certification Scheme, aimed at enhancing health, safety, environmental and operational performance. The scheme includes a standardised Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) linked to biomethane certificates, promoting AD plant decarbonisation.
Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of the WBA, said: “Speed is of the essence if we are to achieve this critical but imminent target of 2030 – just six years away. Hundreds of thousands of biogas plants will need to be built globally, and not only quickly but safely. This can only be achieved if we ensure that the right regulatory framework and common standards are in place and deployed in every country.”
“Methane emissions have been steadily and silently growing these last decades, which makes the case of reducing this GHG one of the fastest single strategies for addressing rising temperature globally,” added Marcelo Mena, CEO of the GMH.
