Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a division of technology company Wärtsilä, has introduced the Wärtsilä Gas Solutions Puregas BC. This new technology purifies and liquefies carbon dioxide captured from biogas upgrading plants. It aims to create a more energy-efficient and profitable process for plant owners.
Traditional biogas upgrading plants release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The new Puregas BC technology captures and repurposes this carbon dioxide using advanced purification methods. This process allows biogas, which has a low carbon footprint, to become a carbon-negative solution.
The Puregas CA biogas upgrading system integrates with the Puregas BC, eliminating nearly all methane emissions. Any residual methane can be returned to the upgrader, further enhancing efficiency.
Beyond environmental benefits, the Puregas BC solution presents a potential revenue opportunity for plant owners. The captured carbon dioxide can be purified to meet food, beverage, and storage standards. Upcoming regulations for e-fuels production may increase demand for bio CO2, making this solution timely.
Magnus Folkelid, Sales Manager at Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, emphasized the importance of addressing carbon emissions. He stated that the Puregas BC can help transition from carbon neutrality to a carbon-negative impact while also delivering commercial advantages.
The technology comes as a containerized plant, eliminating the need for additional buildings. It is designed for seamless integration with Puregas CA systems and can be retrofitted with existing biogas upgrading processes.
