Wallenius Sol introduces biogas initiative to enhance sustainable shipping

Swedish shipping company Wallenius Sol has launched an innovative biogas program aimed at promoting sustainable maritime practices. This initiative allows customers to reduce their carbon footprint by selecting liquefied biogas (LBG) in proportion to their transport fuel consumption, reflecting the company’s commitment to environmentally friendly shipping solutions.

The ISCC-certified biogas offering meets stringent sustainability and traceability standards, helping lower both carbon emissions and European Union Emissions Trading System (ETS) costs. Customers can choose from a range of biogas options, from 10% to 100%, using the mass balance principle to integrate LBG with LNG in their fuel mix.

CEO Elvir Dzanic explained, “It may seem counterintuitive for a shipping company to encourage customers to ‘lighten the load,’ but we’re focused on minimizing our environmental impact through renewable fuels.” Sustainability Manager Rebecca Tagaeus highlighted the collaborative effort involved, stating, “Every small step contributes to a larger impact.”

Wallenius Sol is already blending biogas into its fuel supply and aims to accelerate the transition to renewable energy in partnership with customers. This initiative follows the company’s acquisition of the Botnia Enabler and Baltic Enabler, touted as the world’s largest ice-class ConRo vessels. These ships have multi-fuel capabilities and are recognized for their low carbon emissions, as indicated in the European Maritime Safety Agency’s (EMSA) report.

With the launch of its biogas offering, Wallenius Sol is taking significant steps towards a greener future in the maritime industry.
