Volkswagen AG has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable future for automotive interiors. In partnership with German startup Revoltech GmbH, the automaker has developed LOVR, a 100% bio-based leather alternative crafted from industrial hemp residues.
Set to debut in Volkswagen models as early as 2028, LOVR offers a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional leather. The material is fully recyclable or compostable, aligning with Volkswagen’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. Additionally, LOVR can be produced using existing industrial processes, ensuring its scalability and integration into large-scale manufacturing.
Kai Grünitz, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Technical Development, emphasized the company’s dedication to innovation. “LOVR is a testament to our ongoing search for sustainable solutions that don’t compromise on quality or design,” he said. Andreas Walingen, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, added that the collaboration is a cornerstone of the company’s ACCELERATE strategy, which prioritizes customer satisfaction and sustainability.
Lucas Fuhrmann, CEO of Revoltech GmbH, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “LOVR represents a breakthrough in automotive materials, offering a high-quality, eco-friendly alternative to traditional leather,” he stated. The partnership aims to leverage both companies’ expertise to accelerate the commercialization of this innovative material.
Volkswagen’s development of LOVR is part of a broader initiative to explore sustainable materials for vehicle interiors. The material’s positive reception in initial customer feedback suggests that it could become a popular choice for consumers seeking vehicles with a reduced environmental impact.
