Saint-Gobain Construction Chemicals, through its leading brands Chryso and GCP, is introducing EnviroMix C-Clay, a new range of admixtures designed to promote the use of calcined clay-based cements in concrete production. This addition expands the company’s portfolio of low-carbon concrete admixtures.
The construction industry is shifting towards sustainability, with a focus on reducing carbon emissions. Calcined clay cements have been recognized as a promising alternative to traditional Portland cement due to their potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50%.
However, calcined clay cements also present specific challenges, including high water demand. To address this issue, Saint-Gobain’s dedicated R&D team has characterized over 30 calcined clays from around the world using patented methodologies, such as the CHRYSO Clear test. This expertise has enabled the development of innovative admixtures that enhance the performance and versatility of calcined clay cements.
These new admixtures have been engineered through years of research and development to overcome the technical challenges associated with using calcined clay. They improve both the workability of the concrete and its compressive strength. The innovations are supported by patents filed by Saint-Gobain’s R&D teams.
“Our mission is to empower the construction industry with innovative solutions that not only meet the demands of today but also pave the way for a sustainable future,” says Gustavo Blázquez, Concrete BU Director. “With our advanced admixtures solutions, we aim to overcome the technical challenges associated with low-carbon concrete, unlocking the full potential of calcined clay cements and accelerating the transition towards greener construction practices.”
