Qarlbo Biodiversity and Woodland Biofuels partner to supply sustainable pine thinnings

Qarlbo Biodiversity has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Woodland Biofuels. The agreement commits to supplying up to 500,000 tons of sustainably harvested pine forest thinnings annually. These thinnings will be sourced from properties managed under Qarlbo’s Nature+® Forest Management Strategy.

This partnership represents a major milestone in implementing the Nature+® Strategy. The approach is an innovative form of ecological stewardship that surpasses traditional forestry practices. It aims to ensure a sustainable biomass supply while promoting biodiversity conservation and native species restoration. The strategy supports carbon sequestration, the generation of biodiversity credits, and the development of resilient forest ecosystems.

Aleksandra Holmlund, CEO of Qarlbo Biodiversity, highlighted the significance of the collaboration. She stated, “This partnership with Woodland Biofuels exemplifies how sustainable forestry can serve both economic and ecological goals. The pine forest thinnings will come from forests supporting local ecosystems and the broader environment.”

The pine forest thinnings supplied under the MOU will originate from Qarlbo’s expanded U.S. properties. The company currently operates on a 10,580-acre forest in southern Louisiana, which exemplifies its Nature+® approach. The biomass produced through this agreement will carry certified sustainability credentials and contribute to biodiversity outcomes.

Greg Nuttall, CEO of Woodland Biofuels, emphasized the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. He said, “Our collaboration with Qarlbo Biodiversity aligns with our goal to source renewable feedstocks responsibly. Harvesting pine forest thinnings sustainably advances our mission to produce clean energy while supporting biodiversity and ecosystem health.”
