Primient Covation, a leading producer of 100% bio-based 1,3 propanediol, has introduced new semi-permanent hair color formulations featuring Zemea propanediol. Developed in partnership with Sensient’s Arianor water-soluble dyes, these products aim to balance performance with sustainability and scalp health.
The new formulations are free of developer chemicals and incorporate Arianor dyes, tested under controlled laboratory conditions. Primient Covation reports that 3% Zemea propanediol improved key performance aspects, including ease of application, color evenness, saturation, and wash fastness, compared to control formulas using traditional propylene glycol.
Marjorie Morris, global marketing manager of Zemea, highlighted the ingredient’s efficiency in dye deposition. She noted that Zemea’s ability to help achieve vibrant, long-lasting colors makes it ideal for ammonia-free formulas, reducing potential scalp irritation and supporting gentle, high-performance hair coloring.
Zemea propanediol is a plant-based alternative to petroleum-derived diols, eliminating the need for ingredients like propylene glycol and ammonia. This shift helps reduce environmental concerns and minimizes skin irritation risks, supporting formulations with fewer harsh chemicals.
The ingredient is versatile and suitable for various hair products, including semi-permanent and temporary colorants, color-depositing shampoos, and shine treatments. Additionally, Zemea has received MyMicrobiome certification, confirming its compatibility with the scalp microbiome, ensuring it can be used without harming scalp health.
Additional benefits include enhancing color depth, supporting transition from permanent color, adding shine, reducing dryness, and improving scalp health. Overall, Zemea propanediol offers a promising solution for creating effective, sustainable, and gentle hair color products aligned with consumer expectations.
